Social Babe Spotlight: Brittany Rowan

As summer approaches we all know what that means, its tanning time! However, research has proven that too much time in the sun is not healthy and of course tanning beds are a big no, no! Well that's exactly why our SOCIAL Babe of the Month Brittany Rowan started her mobile spray tanning company, Glow Girl!

We were so excited to chat with Brittany and learn more about how this Boss Babe is taking over the tanning industry. You can read our interview with her below:

WHAT'S YOUR STORY? WHAT'S A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?

My story!  I was born and raised in St. Louis. I spent the last 8 years in Denver, started Glow Girl 2.5 years ago, was planning to move to LA last May, but in the height of the pandemic decided to move home to spend the summer with my family. Once I was in St. Louis, I decided LA was not where I wanted to build my business and decided to make the move to Nashville! My typical day starts with a 5:30am wakeup and I'm at a Lagree class by 6am. After my workout I head home to enjoy coffee and work on administrative items for about three hours. I start seeing clients around 10am and will service throughout the day, into the evening. Between appointments I am on calls or with my team planning and shooting content and working with my business partner on next steps, future partnerships, and expansion. My appointments usually end around 7 or 8pm, but given we are a mobile business, those hours can vary. In the evening, after dinner, I sit down with a glass of wine and finalize upcoming social content, review my calendar for the following day, and prepare for any scheduled meetings.

WHERE DO YOU HOPE TO SEE GLOW GIRL IN 5 YEARS?

In five years we plan to have a fleet of Glowmobiles in cities all across the US. We also plan to have a line of beauty products that complement our brand. Glow Girl has a dream collaboration coming up in April that I am thrilled to announce very soon! We are working on the campaign right now. Other dream partnerships include Stoney Clover Lane, Revolve, Target, and Nordstrom...to name a few!

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WOMEN FOLLOWING A SIMILAR CAREER PATH AND WANT TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS?

Take the leap and keep moving ahead. When you start a business there are so many unknowns, endless. Determination is a powerful thing and if you're determined, you'll figure it out. In the beginning, I would look at a laundry list of to-dos, many that I simply didn't know where to start and I would freeze. I knew when I stopped moving that all I needed to do was take one step forward and the momentum would push me through. It doesn't take much to get the ball rolling and every time I completed one small task, I found myself checking much larger to-dos off the list. It's amazing how quickly you can pick up momentum with something as simple as posting something on social media. One simple task and suddenly you're registering your business with the Secretary of State, starting your taxes, or updating your website. It's simple but effective.

WHAT ARE YOUR PASSIONS?

Healthy-living, Glow Girl, branding, interior design, my family, high-end small towns, morning coffee, and entertaining.

WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES?

Whitney Wolfe-Herd, Sarah Blakely, Payal Kadakia, Sophia Amoruso, Kelly Wearstler, Dolly Parton, and Alli Webb are all huge inspirations to me. They're all from vastly different backgrounds and industries but through strong work ethic, innovation, clear vision, and determination have been able to brand their businesses, and through that, themselves as an authority in their field of work. My mom, hands down, has been and is the biggest influence in shaping who I am as a person. She raised me to be selective of the company I keep, "You are who you have coffee with, Brittany", she taught me to uphold high standards for myself, and to always carry gratitude and appreciation in my heart. My dad started his company at the age of  21 and will hit 40 years in business this year. We are so proud of him. He's the hardest working man I know and would do anything for our family.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH YOU COULD TELL YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

I would tell myself to find a purpose or passion. I'm very proud of all of the jobs I held after college, in fact they were highly competitive to land, but I often wish I had more clarity on what I was interested in pursuing. That said, I acknowledge that the experience I gained over those ten years very likely prepared and allowed me to create and execute the start of Glow Girl with clear vision and confidence.  I still think I'm likely the only person to ever work for a MLB team who didn't know the names of more than one or two players on the team the entire time I served in the front office. I was 23 and in la, la land. Oh, Brittany!

WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU?

While my business partner and I are fundraising to get us to the next level of business, the Glow Girl team is working daily to build brand exposure and educate women on the healthy and safe alternatives that are available so they know they never have to rely on the sun or tanning beds for color.

WHAT SPEAKS TO YOU MOST ABOUT SOCIAL?

I first tried SOCIAL sparkling after a NYE pop-up event in Nashville. I was thrilled with how light and delicious it tasted, and also surprised I wasn't previously aware of the brand. I looked SOCIAL  up on IG and after seeing your branding, my interest was piqued. A few days later, I dug deeper and when I read about Leah's story and the brand journey, I knew I wanted to make SOCIAL Sparkling the exclusive beverage of the Glow Girl experience. I'm proud to partner with a female-founded company in the alcohol industry who offers a clean, healthy alternative for a drink and also serves as a shining example for the girls and women who are watching.
